It is the first day after the end of the state of emergency in the country and we can announce the new date of the charity “Riga-Valmiera” – July 11, which will come just after a month.
Currently, we are working intensively on the coordination of the event in local governments and other state institutions, so that the participants of the popular ultra race in Latvia can also enjoy the wonderful night hours. By the end of June, we will report on the situation, with a spare option for the start at 7.00, just like our big stepbrother Spartatlon in Greece.
On July 11, we will sing the Latvian anthem at the Freedom Monument, which celebrates its hundredth year these days. History reports that the devastating Spanish influenza peaked in November 1918 – at the time when responsible people founded Latvia. On 27 August 1989, the first ultrarun Riga-Valmiera 107 km was three days after a historic and unifying “Baltic road”. This summer, too, the road to the door of Simon’s Church would be a gateway to the new situation.
It is true that safety rules will have to be followed for the fight against Covid19 infection. We will report the changes and additions in the pre-release newsletter in early July. However, Riga-Valmiera still retains the status of LC 100 km and the IAU quality mark – BRONZE label.
Since the date of the competition has been changed, it may be possible to transfer your participation to the following year or to designate another runner to the Quite in his place, by making it known in the email sarakste@ultrataka.lv by 19 June. The third alternative is to tell you about donating 100% of your membership fee to charity, similar to those who pay €107 each year to children with disabilities. This year, the running community is raising funds for the boy Gustav, who lives in Vecpiebalga, who needs a device to start school.
Of course, we hope that postponing the race for three weeks has not changed the goals and will only improve the preparation process for a successful 107 kilometer. For our part, we promise to preserve as much as possible all the usual running traditions, from the mystical piano on the side of the highway to the book of complaints at the 94km checkpoint.
In addition to the good news, we are also announcing the application of volunteer helpers. We will be waiting for your friends, relatives and family members at this important event. It is the volunteer helpers at the start, checkpoints and finish that are the key to the success of the running.
